Chapter Seven

Billy Lou dumped the metal tub of dirty water outside over the back fence and glanced up at Reesa as she swept the back porch for the third time that day. “It doesn’t look as sad, I guess.”

Jason Wright’s head popped into view of the broken back bedroom window. “You ladies are doing great!” He grinned before ducking back into the room to keep laying the groundwork for his restoration.

“I could go for some coffee,” Reesa admitted. “I feel like my early morning is starting to catch up to me.”

A happy toot of the horn had them both walking to the side of the house to see Jamie’s car pulling up. “Does she have a sixth sense?” Reesa asked and turned surprised eyes on Billy Lou.

“God, I hope so.” Billy Lou and Reesa waited patiently as Jamie slipped out of her car, both women briefly disappointed until Jamie held up her finger and reached back inside, withdrawing a cup carrier and a brown bag of treats.

“There she is,” Reesa whispered in thankfulness.

“Honey, you are a life saver!” Billy Lou called.

“We literally just said the word coffee and you honked your horn.”

Jamie laughed, her red curls bouncing as she walked across the yard. “The coffee beans sing to me, what can I say?” She handed Billy Lou a warm cup, Reesa an iced latte, and called, “Jason?”

His head popped up in the open window frame. “Yes ma’am?” His shoulders relaxed when he saw it was Jamie. “Well, hey there, pretty lady.”

Jamie’s cheeks flamed as red as her hair as she held up an extra coffee. “Want a coffee?”

“If you made it, you know it.” He extended his hand out of the window and Jamie walked it over. She nervously handed it to him. “Want to come see my project?”

Jamie’s eyes widened a moment. “Oh, sure. Okay.” She turned towards the other women as he disappeared back into the room and pointed a hand to herself. “Me,” she whispered. “He wants to show me.” She softly giggled in excitement as she slipped into the house. Their voices could be heard through the open windows, and Jamie’s appreciative response and wonder at the hole in the ground was just what Jason was after. She asked questions and they engaged in friendly banter back and forth.

“I think that’s the most that girl has ever spoken to him in all her years on this earth,” Billy Lou whispered.

“I know.” Reesa smiled. “I’m kind of in shock.”

“As am I...” Billy Lou’s voice trailed off and Reesa leaned in her direction to see what had captured her attention. Theo’s truck pulling up the drive with Charlie beside him and another rusted pickup behind it had Billy Lou stiffening. “That fool.” She marched towards the truck, and as soon as Charlie stepped out, Billy Lou lit into him. “What on earth, Charlie Edwards? You already have a truck you’re workin’ on, and a house! Why did you even pick this junk up?”

Charlie grinned and then looked at Theo.
